6Sens is the brasserie restaurant housed at the French Pavilion in the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, which runs from May 1 to October 31, 2010. Twin-Michelin-starred chefs Jacques and Laurent Pourcel run the show.  The 2010 Expo is a huge, crowded and hot exhibition with long lines and outrageous exhibit halls.

Here are some videos we shot from the Shanghai Expo 2010:

The twins run the restaurant le Jardin des Sens in Montpellier, France, as well as restaurants in Bangkok, Tokyo, Geneva, Marrakech, Casablanca and Paris. They also run the newly opened Maison Pourcel, (6-8/F, 35 Shanxi Nan Lu, near Changle Lu) in the French Concession of Shanghai. They used to run the restaurant Sens & Bund, which closed in 2008.

The best part of dining here is avoidance of the 2-4 hour line to visit the France Pavilion, so we had to try this restaurant. Our wait time was about 20 minutes.

Note the guy sleeping!

Decor, Vibe – 6Sens had long narrow indoor dining hall with a nice view of the Huangpu river. The place was 98% Chinese with several families and a commerical event in the back. We would guess that the majority of the folks dining have never eaten a real French meal.

Picks:

6Sens France Pavilion Shanghai Expo 2010 Foie gras

Escalopes de foie gras poelees, polenta cremeuse et croustillante, vinaigrette aux agrumes came with thin but tasty pieces of foie gras in a fruity bath.

6Sens France Pavilion Shanghai Expo 2010 gambas roties

Les queues de gambas roties, vinaigrette en aigre-doux, fruits du moment, salade fraicheur had one large fresh shrimp of quality, that was cooked just right. The salad was refreshing but a bit on the mushy side.

6Sens France Pavilion Shanghai Expo 2010 filet de cod roti

Le filet de cod roti sur un risotto noir aux coquillages, boullon emulsionne de fenouil, tuile a l’encre de seiche was a large chunk of cod, cooked very well and served on a bed of very good squid ink risotto with bits of squid.

6Sens France Pavilion Shanghai Expo 2010 carre d agneau roti

Le carre d’agneau roti, fine puree de petit pois, carottes fanes, samoussa croustillant, sauce citro-badiane looked horrible, was thin and gamey, but overall was passable due to robust meat flavors. Nice pea mashed potatoes.

6Sens France Pavilion Shanghai Expo 2010 vert Matcha et Chocolat Valrhona

Le desert Pavillon France au the vert Matcha et Chocolat Valrhona, creme glacee was in their signature dessert with lots of different textures and flavors mix together. A Very good dessert.

6Sens France Pavilion Shanghai Expo 2010 Crumble de mangue

Crumble de mangue rotie au carmel, creme glacee was a solid dessert with crispy textured streusel on top of the sweet mango bed à la mode.

OK:

Amuse Bouche of watermelon soup was pretty bland.

La fine tarte feuilletee a la tomate fraiche, filet de maquereau grille a la plancha, vinagrette aux citrons confits, salade de saison had a very fishy slice of mackerel and a fair amount of fish roe. Tomatoes and the pastry shell is very good.

Le filet de bar cuit longument au four, fine puree de mais a la citronnelle, asperges vertes, emulasion a la coriandre, tuile au parmesan was cooked well and was a very fishy dish, the cod was far better.

Pans:
None

Service – 6Sens had terrible service with the need to ask for almost everything. We were tempted to serve ourselves water. Servers did not even announce what they were serving.

Value – US$60 for a 3 course French meal is reasonable for the USA, but very expensive for the locals.

Verdict – 6Sens was good way to eliminate standing in line for hours to visit the France Pavilion at Expo 2010. The food was acceptable but the service lacking. Food quality is about what we expected for a temporary venue like the Shanghai Expo 2010.

$25 Dining Certificate for $5

  1. Eat. Travel. Eat! Says:

Certainly looks quite nice for a temporary restaurant or a regular restaurant in China! Quite weird for service-wise but probably training issue?

I do like how the restaurant is bright though unlike most higher end restaurants in California where the interior is dim. :)

  2. Food Nut Says:

There were only a handful of folks from France running the restaurant.. More would have helped as would more training. They are representing all of France after all!
