The Noodle Shop 164 West 25th Ave (Near Hacienda) San Mateo, CA 94403 650-345-1277 |
The Noodle Shop is a Chinese restaurant in San Mateo’s 25th Avenue shopping district. They specialize in Mandarin Hunan Cuisine and Mao’s Family Dishes. Many items are hot and spicy through the use of red chili oil. This restaurant has changed hands several times in the last couple years. They now have some nice looking rice dishes served in a bamboo steamer.
Decor, Vibe – Small dining room with about 12 tables with clean but minimal decor. It was pretty busy at lunch with a balance of Asians and several Caucasian parties.

Picks:
Fried Mini Buns ($2.50) were six little deep fried buns with sweetened condensed milk.
Fish Dumpling Noodle Soup ($6.75) had hand made noodles made from unbleached flour and about 9 tasty fish balls. An excellent value at this price.
Kung Pao Chicken & Rice in a Bamboo Steamer ($5.95) was advertisted as a chef’s specialty on a picture on the wall. Big portion for a lunch special, not spicy like most others, more tangy.
OK:
None

Service was decent in this small restaurant. This restaurant is right across the street from a decent Shanghainese Chinese place, which forced them to change cuisines to prevent overlap. Prices are very good with good food quality, making this a pretty good value.
They have Bamboo Basket Rice plate lunch specials Mon-Fri 11am – 2:30pm for $5.95.
