Bar Jules San Francisco Exterior

Bar Jules is a small restaurant located in Hayes Valley in San Francisco. It opened in late 2007. The owner is a Slanted Door, Zuni Cafe alumni. They specialize in local, seasonal organic produce, and sustainable meat and fish. They have a new short handwritten menu on the wall every day, similar to Ad Hoc. Vegeterian dishes can be custom made. No reservation, walk-in seating only. We went for a Saturday lunch.

Bar Jules San Francisco Interior

Decor, Vibe – Small restaurant with minimal decor, couple tables on the sidewalk, tables inside and counter seating. Folks mostly in 30’s and 40’s were dining. Most were jean wearing casual neighborhood locals.

Picks:

Bar Jules San Francisco tuscan Bean soup

“Ribollita” Tuscan style bread soup ($9) with kale and white beans was delicious. Lots of fresh veggies and tasty broth. This soup must have been cooking for hours.

Bar Jules San Francisco Fried Egg

Fried eggs ($16) with moroccan style lamb, potatoes and artichoke hearts was an interesting combination of flavors that worked well. All items were cooked well and the lamb creatively accented the eggs.

OK:

Bar Jules San Francisco Hamburger

Marin sun farms burger ($14) with a little salad had a huge piece of meat that was taller than the buns. The meat had a distinctive beef flavor. No onion or tomato came with this burger. Probably should have ordered it with cheese and bacon. They salad was lightly dressed and tasted very light. Mustard was super spicy.

Pans:
None

Bar Jules did not have the best service in the world. They could have used more help. Had to work hard to track down our waiteress several times. The food here is of high quality and turnover was fast, making this a quick informal bite for most folks.
I have no problem recommending this place, especially if you are near Hayes valley. Their menu is changes a lot, so check their web site before you go.
