Hog Island San Francisco interior decor

Hog Island Oyster Co. is located in San Francisco’s Ferry Building. They have an oyster bar that serves sustainable seafood, chowder, and salads. Fresh oysters brought fresh from their Tomales Bay farm each morning. They served baked oysters and cooked seafood for those that do not want raw items. You could drive up to their farm and get oysters even fresher. Our last visit was in May 2011.

Decor, Vibe – Small place with counter seating in the center and a couple tables on the side. Locals and tourists of all ages were eating.

Picks:

Hog Island San Francisco Manila Clams

Steamed Manila Clams ($14) with garlic, butter, chili flake and white wine broth were plentiful, fresh, and were in a flavorful broth with some sausage. Clams were small.

Hog Island San Francisco raw Oysters

Hog Island Sweetwater, Blue pool, Penn Cove Selects, Stellar Bay, Beau Soleil, and Naked Cowboy ($18 for 6) were fresh and good. We wish more were local oysters though. Lemon, Lime, and red wine vinegar dip helped them go down fast. We prefer the smaller more flavorful oysters. A bit pricey, but still worthwhile. At least it is served with excellent Acme bakery Epi bread.

Hog Island Oyster Co. serves up a limited focused menu. If you are looking for oysters, look no further. Service was slightly above average, not exceptional. Few places can say they grow the oysters and serve them to you also. Another great reason to visit the foodie haven known as the Ferry Building. Be careful, as the larger dining area next to Hog Island, is  Ferry Plaza Seafood, not your intended target.

Be sure to check to see  and see if Hog Island has happy hour specials available.
