The San Mateo location closed. November 2009 this location will reopen as Champagne Seafood Restaurant.
Try their Joy Luck Place’s Cupertino location or visit HK Causeway Bay across the street.
Joy Luck Place is part of a restaurant group that has Chinese Cantonese restaurants locations in the San Francisco Bay area; San Mateo and Cupertino. We’ve been to both of them and find them pretty good. This review concentrates on dinner. Another review covers dim sum lunch. They have weekday daily specials that are of good value, everything from Crab to Squab. Be sure to try one.
Seafood Tanks = Fresh
Decor, Vibe – Clean, improved atmosphere over the typical Chinese restaurant. Joy Luck Place is a fairly busy and noisy Chinese restaurant with lots of families and friends eating together.

Picks:
Winter melon Soup ($35) was a smaller version of their $70 signature soup. We saw several tables getting this. Awesome broth that was perfectly accented by the tender melon. Pieces of duck and crab filled the rim and interior of this great soup.
Peking Duck ($25) included carved slices with skin, buns, and also the interior of the duck chopped up. Many places keep the inside (for their soup use) and only give you skin. Quality was very good, crispy skin, moist meat, and hot steamed buns.
Honey Glazed Beef Short Ribs ($14) is a classic dish here. Good quantity and a light sweet taste makes the tender ribs very good. Slight burn should have been avoided.
Braised Bean Curd with Mushrooms and Bok Choy ($11) had good quantities of tofu and green. A little light on the black mushrooms. Not too much gravy made it balanced.
House Special Roast Chicken ($12 Half) is crispy skinned and comes with shrimp chips. A classic dish done well.
Yang Chou Fried Rice has lots of ingredients mixed in with the rice including whole shrimp, egg, and vegetables.
OK:
Sauteed Chinese Broccoli ($10) was fresh and cooked well, but a little on the greasy side.
Pans:
None
Joy Luck Place has a free dessert of the day, red bean soup, which you may have to ask for. Service was a little above average for a place like this. Dinner service is less chaotic than lunch, when everyone is running around.
The breath of menu is good. All in all, the food was of decent quality and authentic. This is our default go to place for a everyday Chinese meal.

Update: 4/19/2008 Noticably less people here for dinner. Must be the economy and the new competition kitty corner across the street, HK Causeway Bay.
