Sakae Sushi is a small sushi restaurant in Burlingame, just off busy Burlingame Avenue. It has been here for over 10 years. It is run by a Japanese team and specializes in higher end Japanese food. The white-board on the wall has the special items worthy of ordering. We came for a quick lunch. Lunch specials Monday through Friday only. We later went back for dinner.
Decor, Vibe – Small, cramped intimate restaurant with minimal decor. Couple of tables and a sushi bar. Many locals and people of Japanese descent were dining. Pretty quiet during lunch time.

Picks:
Omakase for 2 (Trust the chef) ($65) had tons of fresh fish, Yellowtail, Aji, Maguro, Scallop, amaebi, etc. Very well done. Even came with the remants of the mackeral. They even will deep fry the shrimp and fish head for you.
Jidori Yaki Yuzu ($11.75) – was grilled free range organic chicken with miso and yuzu paste. Very crispy skin and delicious meat.
Chicken Teriyaki Lunch Special ($11.95) – Good quality chicken teriyaki in decent quantity. Not burnt, sauce was a little sweet. Miso soup was above average.
Sushi Lunch Special ($9.75) – 6 pieces of California roll and 1 piece of Tuna, Shrimp, Salmon, and Crab salad
Clam Miso Soup with Red miso ($6.50) When a waitress asks what kind of miso you want, (red or white), you know it is a serious place. Very strong flavor.
OK:
Grilled Hokkaido Scallops ($12) were in a mayonaise, lemon, seaweed bath. No need for all this with such fresh scallops.
Grilled Asparagus ($6.75) We needed some veggies so we got this dish. Nothing special to it.
Pans:
None
Service was good with no need to intentionally look for the server. Prices at lunch are on the higher end of reasonable. Prices for dinner are high, with simple Chicken Teriyaki dinner costing $18. Food was decent. They really seem to specialize in more exotic top quality fish flown in from Japan and sold at Market prices. (IE Kampachi, Aji, Tairagi, Shimaji, $$$$) They also have lots of Sake.
If you seek high quality Japanese food like Omakase (chef’s choice) Sushi at equally high prices, do not hesitate coming to this boutique restaurant. Hotaru and Sushi Sam in San Mateo can satisfy the masses at a lower price. We will have to make a return trip to try the specialties.
