Joy Luck Place Dim Sum Exterior

Joy Luck Place is part of a restaurant group that has Chinese Cantonese restaurants locations in the San Francisco Bay area namely Cupertino. Their San Mateo location closed in 2009. We’ve been to both of them and find them pretty good. This review concentrates on dim sum served only during lunch. Another review covers dinner.

Decor, Vibe – Clean, improved atmosphere over the typical Chinese restaurant. Joy Luck Place is a fairly busy and noisy Chinese restaurant with lots of families and friends eating together.

Joy Luck Place Dim Sum Chicken Feet

Chicken Feet (fung zao) ($2.80) – Classic parts cooked well and with a great flavor.

Joy Luck Place Dim Sum Stewed Tripe

Stewed Tripe ($4.20) – Crunch but a little chewy. Lots of stomach parts. It did have a good flavor. Not for the faint of heart..

Joy Luck Place Dim Sum Shrimp Rice Noodle

Shrimp Rice Noodle ($5) – Nice and giggly, lots of shrimp, not too oily.

Joy Luck Place Dim Sum Shrimp Dumplings

Shrimp Dumplings (Har gow) – ($4.20) 4 to an order. Big shrimp, good wrapper.

OK:

Joy Luck Place Dim Sum Pork Buns

Pork Buns ($2.80) – 3 small ones to an order. Texture and meat were okay.

Joy Luck Place Dim Sum 5

Steamed Spare ribs in Black Bean (pai gwat) ($3.50) – Tender meat but not a lot of flavor. Also oily and salty.

Pans:
None

Service was a little above average for a place like this. You have to hunt down the workers for most requests. 11am on weekends is the best time to arrive. No line and lots of different food available instantly. The breath of items was good. All in all, the food was of decent quality and reasonably priced.
