Why did we dine here? – Outerlands has established the outer sunset into a foodie destination. No reservations, so there is a line out the door before the place opens. Lana Porcello and David Muller have created an oasis in this cold drab, often foggy part of town where the Muni Metro clanks through every couple minutes. We came for lunch and waited 20 minutes. On another occasion we had dinner.

Insider Tip – Get in line early! They do take reservations for dinner.

Cuisine – New American
Location – Outer Sunset
Opened – 2012

Service – Outerlands has very good service from their laid back but professional servers.
Verdict – Outerlands met our high expectations. Modern American food with top notch ingredients and techniques. Definitely belongs on every foodie’s to do list. It feels like a neighborhood restaurant that the world is slowly discovering.

When we went in the evening, its was fun to see well dressed folks show up in such a funky restaurant full of casually dressed servers.

Outerlands Food Picks:

Outerlands Dinner:

Picks:
Our Levain Toast (v). with house cultured butter ($4) was excellent. Thick slices of their home made bread with some high quality butter. You can buy their bread by the loaf.. That is before it sells out.

Levain Toast with andante dairy picolo – cow’s milk, creme fraiche, soft ripened. ($8) had a strong brie like cheese. Great combo for soft cheese fans. These guys supply cheese to French Laundry.

Baby Kale And Shaved Carrot Salad – pickled beets, blackberries, grain mustard dressing ($11) was a well portioned salad with lots of fresh greens.

Outerlands San Francisco uni salad

Dashi Steamed New Potatoes & Mendocino Uni chrysanthemum, radish, umeboshi, kombu salt. ($16) included 3 pieces of very fresh sea urchin which worked well with the starchy potatoes and crunch cuc’s.

Olive Oil Poached Octopus spicy white bean, cucumber, charred grapes, fresh coriander ($17) was another excellent starter. Very tender octopus with rich flavors along with some fun cooked grapes for contrast.

California King Salmon sweet corn and fennel seed fritters, blackened chili sauce, japanese eggplant, horseradish creme ($26) was one of the better entrees we had. Ample quantity, correct cooking, and a fun combination of sides.

Outerlands San Francisco pork tenderloin

Sumac Spiced Berkshire Pork Tenderloin cracked farro, nectarine, green tomato, hazelnuts ($27) was also a solid entree with a really nice sauce on the tender pork.

Marinated Summer Squash (v). white balsamic, toasted sunflower seeds, amaranth ($7) looks great with its variety filled weaving lines.

Glazed Shelling And Pole Beans smoked pork, crispy onion, colatura di alici ($8) was also filled with a wide variety of beans. Vegetarians will want to ask for no pork.

OK:
Slow Roasted Lamb Shoulder spring onion braised with preserved meyer & castelvetrano olive, nettles, roasted turnip, flatbread ($27) had good textures on the gamey lamb but was a bit bland, especially without the au jus gravy.

Outerlands Lunch:

Outerlands San Francisco citrus salad

Avocado and winter citrus salad ($10) mustard greens, toasted almond, sherry vinegar was excellent. Refreshing, interesting dressing, and fresh ingredients.

Outerlands San Francisco curry sandwich

curry spiced beef sandwich ($13.5) pickled slaw, coconut milk & carmelized onion jam, cilantro, side of greens – Fresh baked bread, meaty, interesting curry flavor.

Outerlands San Francisco pork sandwich

pork shoulder & spicy tomato sandwich ($12) marinated cabbage, picked mustar seed, swiss, side of greens was the better of the sandwiches. Huge, artery clogging, complex flavor profile.

Outerlands San Francisco oreo cookie

Fresh baked cookies ($2 each) Oreo, Chocolate chip – Nicely done!
