Why did we dine here? – Mokutanya is a modern Japanese restaurant located in a non-descript strip mall in sleepy Burlingame. A friend suggested this restaurant, so we were excited to give it a try. The food and atmosphere exceeded our expectations. Koko is one of the better skewer restaurants in this area and Mokutanya exceeds it in terms of quality and fun.
Insider Tip – Make reservations, this place gets busy especially late
Cuisine – Japanese Yakitori
Location – Burlingame
Opened – 2011
Service – Mokutanya had fair service. We had to chase them down to get many things done.
Verdict – Mokutanya is a fun Japanese Izakaya style restaurant with surprisingly good food and an extremely modern interior. Apparentely, the restaurant turns into more of a night club in the late evening. They close at 2am everyday.
Because the service hit or miss, we recommend that you order everything at one time.
Mokutanya Signature Dishes – Skewers, Saki, Ramen.
Mokutanya’s Menu has a wide variety of items including many different Yakitori charcoal grill skewers. It will take many of these to get full, so expect expensive bills.
Mokutanya Food Picks:
Kumamoto Oysters ($4 each), chicken with wasabi paste ($3.50), Kawa ($3), Guytan ($4), Butabara ($3.50), Kamo ($4), Lamb ($4), Teba ($3), Geso Karaage ($8).
Wagyu Beef ($4.50) was a must order. Lots of flavor and extremely juicy.
Tonkotsu Ramen ($10) was surprisingly excellent. Stellar broth.
Cold Ramen ($7) was also a must order. A nice balance of different flavors and textures.
OK: (Order if you like this dish)
Spicy Beef ($4) was extremely spicy and not very tender.
Pans: (We would not reorder these dishes)
